Mission of the College
To provide an academic stimulating environment through the provision of educational resources, effective teaching, learning and extra curricular activies.
Federal Government Girls College, Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria was founded by the Federal Government of Nigeria on 15 October 1973, with initial student membership of about 72. The College was one of the first set of 13 unity schools established that year and was at the forefront of improving female education in Nigeria .
FGGC Benin which was initially at its temporary site at Idia College in 1973 moved to its current permanent site located very close to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) in September 1975 and has a road named after it (Federal Road). Her first principal was an Indian Lady Miss R. Bokdawala.
Previous principals of the school include Ms Bokdawala, Ms Pelly, Mrs Omigie, Mrs Nnamme, Mrs Oligbo, Mrs Obiennu, Dr (Mrs) Omogbai-Osyka, Mrs Ajila, Mrs Eza, Mr Nebuwa (Acting Principal), Mrs Kez Okeke. Mrs Falashinnu, Mrs Gladys Ekhabafe, Mrs P.U Erhahon, Mrs V. V Pam, Mrs Takerhi, Mrs Aghedo and presently Mrs T. C Atoe.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE COLEGE
The aims and objectives of the college are as follow:
a. To foster a spirit of oneness and national unity among students
b. To achieve secondary education as set out in the national policy on education through the pursuit of appropriate curricula, syllabuses and teaching aimed at preparation for useful living within the society and preparation for higher education.
c. To inculcate the spirit of leadership and self-discipline in the students through their participation in the management of classroom, boarding house, year group, cultural and social organizations and to develop individual talents in sports.
d. To provide a teaching and learinng environment for students to attain a high level of education, for excellence both in academic purcuit and development of an all embracing persoanality, through adequate and qualitative staffing, sound schools management and practices and the provision of suitable infrastructure, facilities and resources in the college.
